The Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government has outlined the registration and inspection regime for septic tanks to be introduced to address a ruling issued by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in October 2009. In order to ensure septic tank and other on-site wastewater treatment systems compliance:
• Householders with septic tanks/ on-site systems will be required to register system details with the relevant local authority
• Householders will be required to pay a modest registration fee (no more than €50 is envisaged)
• Following initial registration, householders will not be required to re-register their systems for several years
• While inspections would be concentrated on areas with higher risk to the environment and public health, they will also be carried out in lower risk areas but at a lower rate
• Inspections may give rise to householders being advised to improve the maintenance of their systems or, in more serious situations, may require the upgrading or remediation of the treatment system
Do you need to get a septic tank emptied and disposed?
Yes. AQS offers a full septic tank clean out and authorised disposal for domestic customers. In order to reduce the cost of the cleaning process we encourage all customers to ask their neighbours if they require the same service and as such the discounted price can be passed on.
